Direkt zum Artikel ↓For a first round of Penang hawker food, go to Gurney Drive Hawker Centre or the New Lane (Lorong Baru) street stalls in the evening, and to the Chulia Street night stalls for a late bite in George Town. Start with char kway teow, assam laksa, Hokkien mee (prawn noodle soup) and cendol. Most dishes cost roughly RM 6–15, and you pay in cash at each stall. Our Penang Offline Place Guide keeps food stops and sights on your phone; the Penang guides are available in English, Spanish and German.
A hawker centre is a covered area with many small stalls around shared tables. Street hawkers set up the same way along a road, usually in the evening. The routine is the same in both:
Stalls open and close on their own schedule. Many take one day off a week, and some disappear for a few days around festivals. A stall someone recommended last year may have moved.
Heavy rain can close street stalls early. Go to a hawker centre with a roof, such as the covered parts of Gurney Drive, or to a food court in a shopping centre. If the stall you wanted is shut, order the same dish from a neighbour. In Penang, the dish matters more than the name on the sign.
Char kway teow, assam laksa, Hokkien mee, curry mee, nasi kandar, rojak and cendol are the best-known dishes. Penang is often called one of the food capitals of Malaysia.
Most visitors eat at hawker stalls without problems. Choose busy stalls with a quick turnover, eat food that is cooked fresh in front of you and drink bottled water if your stomach is sensitive.
Mostly no. Bring cash in small notes. Some stalls accept local e-wallets or QR payments.
The Penang Offline Place Guide puts food areas and sights on one list, and the Penang Itineraries fit meals into each day route. Both are available in English, Spanish and German. Find them in the Penang travel guides collection.
Times and prices are planning estimates from our research. Stalls change hours and locations. Check current information before you go.
