Was die Sieg weiterträgt is a complete novel set in Hennef, the town on the river Sieg near Bonn. Sound recordist Jona comes to Hennef to prepare a listening evening with Eva, and the recordings he makes of voices, paths and the river slowly turn a paid job into something more. The German original runs to 51,058 words in 43 chapters, and English and Spanish editions are available too. You buy Was die Sieg weiterträgt as a digital download in PDF, EPUB, HTML and Markdown. Nothing is printed or shipped.

Below you will find what the book is about without spoilers, how long it is, which language edition to choose, and which real parts of Hennef fit the reading.

What the novel is about

Jona is not a tourist. He arrives with equipment and an assignment: together with Eva he is putting together an evening where people listen to recorded sound. To do that he records what the town offers him, from people talking to the paths they walk and the Sieg itself. Over the course of the book the work stops being only work. That is the premise, and we stop there.

It is a quiet contemporary novel, not a crime story or a historical saga. The settings are real, but the characters, the private businesses and the events are invented. So there is no studio or venue to look for, and no character's flat. Hennef's residential streets are where people live, and they are best seen from public space.

Length, formats and reading it on a trip

  • Length: 43 chapters; the German original has 51,058 words of narrative text.
  • PDF: 167 pages in A4 in the German edition, with a clickable table of contents. You can print it, but it is laid out for reading on screen or an e-reader.
  • EPUB: validated with EPUBCheck. On a Kindle, use Send to Kindle.
  • HTML and Markdown: a reading version for any browser, plus an editable text file.

With 43 chapters over 167 pages, most chapters are a few pages long. That works well for a train ride or an evening at your accommodation. Download the EPUB before you leave and open it once in your reading app, so you know it is stored offline.

Which language edition to read

The novel was written in German and is also available in English and Spanish editions. You choose the language on the product page before you pay. If you read contemporary German fiction comfortably, take the original. If you are still learning, the English or Spanish edition is the easier way into fifty thousand words of ordinary prose.

To give you an idea of the tone, some chapter titles of the German original are Das Gewicht der Tasche (The weight of the bag), Eine Strecke ist kein Strich (A route is not a line), Wasser von oben (Water from above) and Die Nacht im Kopfhörer (The night in the headphones).

Where in Hennef the book takes you

The table of contents does not name specific streets or sights, so we are not going to match scenes to addresses. The one real place the premise names is the river. If you want to see the Sieg for yourself, this is what our Hennef guide suggests:

  • A first walk to the Sieg. From the centre, pick a short out-and-back stretch on a public path rather than an ambitious loop. The river is not an open promenade: bridges, public sections, private land and protected areas decide where you can walk. After heavy rain the same path can look different, so turn back if a section is unclear or closed.
  • Horstmannsteg and the Allner See. The town names the footpath over the Horstmannsteg as a way to reach the Allner See from central parking. Swimming in the lake is allowed, but it is not an official bathing water and there is no lifeguard. You can visit it perfectly well as a walk without going in.
  • Standing still at the river. Choose a quiet public spot and stay a while. You notice more of the current, the banks and the edge between water and land than by hopping between viewpoints. For a book about listening, that is a fitting way to spend half an hour.

If listening is what draws you in, one more idea that is ours and not the novel's: Stadt Blankenberg, on a ridge above the Sieg, has an official Lauschtour, an audio walk through the village. Load it before you arrive, keep one ear free for traffic, and plan the climb up from the station as part of the outing.
