One food focus per day, check price and portion at markets, start with noodles, a pancake or a barbecue evening, and carry dietary needs in Korean.

Direkt zum Artikel ↓For a first food trip in Seoul, keep it simple: a market lunch, a bowl of noodles or dumplings and one unhurried barbecue evening, spread over different days. Before you order, check the displayed price and portion, and if you have dietary restrictions, carry a clear explanation in Korean, because broths, sauces and shared preparation matter as much as what you can see on the plate.
Seoul is an easy city to eat in once you stop trying to fit everything you have seen online into one day. Here is how we plan meals in our guides, from ordering at a market counter to fitting dinner into a sightseeing route.
Let meals shape the day rather than interrupt it. A market lunch, a bowl of noodles and a long evening barbecue each have their own rhythm, so don't arrange all three as major events on the same date. One clear food moment per day, with simple meals around it, is easier on your stomach and your schedule.
The same goes for reservations. You will notice more if you do not turn every meal into a booking. A small restaurant near a station, where lunch arrives on several little plates, can be as memorable as a place you queued for. Department-store basements are another everyday option worth knowing about, especially on a tired evening. The food chapter and day routes in our Seoul Master Guide follow this same idea.
Markets are where most first-timers feel unsure, and a few habits make a big difference:
Choose the market by the day you are already having. Gwangjang Market fits a central day in Jongno. Namdaemun Market works best with one purpose, lunch for example, and its traders keep different hours. Mangwon Market is a neighbourhood food stop that pairs with a day in Mapo, so you avoid crossing the city for one snack. If two markets fall on the same route, eat lunch at one and just browse the other.
Cafés deserve a mention too. Hongdae and Seongsu are the districts we send people to for café breaks, and in Seongsu it helps to save one or two places you care about and leave the rest to chance.
Carry a clear explanation of your requirements in Korean and show it before ordering. Broths, sauces and shared preparation matter as much as the visible ingredients, so do not assume that a dish which looks like vegetables is vegetarian. At noodle and dumpling places, ask specifically about the broth and the fillings. At markets, the walk-through circuit gives you time to spot which counters are likely to work for you.
Our ten day routes budget KRW 30,000–90,000 per day for food, local transport and visits together, before accommodation.
Not for most meals. For popular places, check how the queue works and which branch you mean, and for some tea experiences check whether a reservation is required.
It takes some preparation. Show a written Korean explanation and ask about broths and sauces, because a vegetable dish can still contain animal products.
Walk through once, compare displayed prices and portions, and order a small amount to start. Ask where it is fine to eat rather than standing in the aisle.
We don't work with a separate food figure. Our routes plan KRW 30,000–90,000 a day for food, local transport and visits together, which leaves room for one bigger meal.
The Seoul Master Guide is a 92-page PDF covering arrival, areas, food, seasons and ten day routes, with clickable contents and an A–Z index. Gwangjang Market, Mangwon Market and Myeongdong Kyoja are among the places in the Seoul Offline Place Guide, which you can search offline or import into your map app. To see how market lunches fit into full days, use the Seoul Itineraries with 10 day routes. Everything for the city is in Seoul Travel Guides.
