Short answer: For many dives in a short time, courses and night dives, Koh Tao is the better base. Its sites are 15 to 45 minutes away, and two dives cost about 1,800 to 2,200 baht. Koh Samui suits you if you want a direct flight, hotel pickup and more to do on dive-free days. In return the boat rides are longer and day trips cost more.

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao lie close together in the Gulf of Thailand, and all three have diving all year. The difference is mainly the distance to the dive sites and what you expect on land. The boat times and prices below come from a comparison of local dive centres by divefever. This dive-site atlas series by an SSI divemaster covers the sites in German (German-language edition).

Koh Tao: short rides and two trips a day

Dive centres on Koh Tao run two trips a day, each with two dives. The morning boat leaves between 6:30 and 7:20 and is back by about 12:30 at the latest. One guide leads up to four divers.

White Rock and the HTMS Sattakut wreck are about 15 minutes from French Kiss, Chumphon Pinnacle 40 to 45 minutes. Sairee Beach has no pier, so a longtail takes you out to the dive boat. Ferries and many day boats leave from Mae Haad.

For beginners there are calm sites such as Japanese Gardens at Koh Nang Yuan and Aow Leuk bay. An Open Water course on Koh Tao costs about 10,950 to 12,500 baht. The island has no airport, so you arrive by ferry from Chumphon or Koh Samui.

Koh Samui: airport, hotel pickup and longer rides

Koh Samui is the only one of the three islands with an airport, and Bangkok Airways flies nonstop from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. From here you dive on day trips with two dives. Silent Divers, for example, collects guests at their hotel between 7:45 and 8:30.

The speedboat leaves at 9:00 from Bang Rak pier, and you are back at the hotel between 14:30 and 16:00. Destinations are Sail Rock and Ang Thong, each about an hour away, and Koh Tao with Chumphon Pinnacle at about 90 minutes. Two dives cost 4,650 to 5,150 baht with this operator.

The figures were collected in October 2026. Dive centres change prices without notice, so ask before you book.

When Koh Samui is still the better choice

Koh Samui makes sense if only part of your group dives, or if you plan just two or three dive days. You skip the ferry and have more choice of hotels, markets and day trips on land. With 228.7 km², it is Thailand's second-largest island after Phuket.

Many people combine both islands. Big Blue Diving offers packages from Koh Samui with hotel pickup and the Lomprayah ferry. Its Open Water course costs 18,000 baht as a Samui package and 14,000 baht directly on Koh Tao. Keep a buffer day before your flight home, because ferries can be cancelled in storms.

What the season changes

From late October to early January the north-east monsoon brings the most rain, especially in November and December. Boats on Koh Tao move to the sheltered west side, and Sail Rock trips are often cancelled in October and November. If you are booking for this winter, plan for that.

Conditions settle from January, and February is usually the driest month. Several Koh Tao dive centres name March to May as the best time for whale sharks, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Koh Tao or Koh Samui better for beginners?

For a course, Koh Tao is cheaper and more flexible, with training sites close by. On Koh Samui the course costs more, but you avoid the ferry.

Can you dive Koh Tao from Koh Samui?

Yes, day trips reach Koh Tao and Chumphon Pinnacle in about 90 minutes. According to Big Blue Diving, day operators from Samui often visit only the southern sites.

How long is the ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Tao?

The Lomprayah catamaran takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around 700 baht, according to Visit Thailand Today. With a change on Koh Phangan it can take about three hours.

Is Koh Phangan an alternative?

Yes, if Sail Rock is your main goal. Koh Phangan has the shortest ride there of the three islands.

Plan your island mix

If you stay on Koh Samui and dive from there, Where to Stay in Koh Samui helps you choose the area. A hotel near Bang Rak or Bophut shortens the way to the pier. All diving and travel topics for both islands are on Koh Samui and Koh Tao: diving and travel.
