Jatiluwih works best as a full day from Ubud: 90–150 minutes each way, a walk on a marked section, lunch nearby and nothing distant added on top.

Direkt zum Artikel ↓Plan Jatiluwih as a full day of its own. From Ubud, allow 90–150 minutes by road each way, walk a permitted marked section of the terraces, eat lunch nearby and head back with daylight to spare. Adding distant temples on top turns the terraces into a roadside stop. Jatiluwih is in Tabanan, and the fields are working farmland. The visit is about spending a few hours in that landscape rather than collecting one viewpoint.
The plan below is the route we call Jatiluwih without rushing in our Bali Itineraries, with the reasoning behind each part of the day.
The drive is the main reason. With 90–150 minutes of road in each direction, you can spend three to five hours in the car. Squeeze the terraces in between other sights and you get a short walk, a photo and a long ride home.
The second reason is the landscape itself. Water channels run between the fields, the terraces sit at different levels and paths connect plots that are being farmed. You only notice this when you walk for a while, so give the walk the morning rather than half an hour.
Planning budget for the route: IDR 600,000–1,100,000. The route lists Jatiluwih three times in a row on purpose: that is time in the landscape, not three tickets.
Stay on permitted paths. These are productive fields, and someone's work depends on them. Choose a marked section that fits your group and ask locally about current access before you set off, because it can change.
Two expectations worth adjusting before you go:
For a day like this, a driver is the practical option. Agree the hours, the stops, the waiting time and any overtime before you leave Ubud, so a long lunch does not turn into an argument later. Do not make a scooter the default for an unfamiliar road this long.
Our times start and end in central Ubud. If you are staying on the coast, ask your accommodation or driver for an estimate from your exact address, and be honest with yourself about whether the day still works. Moving to Ubud for a few nights is often the better plan if inland days are a big part of your trip.
The uplands have their own weather. A shower can arrive inland while the beach districts stay bright, so look at the current forecast before the long drive. In heavy rain, drop the longer walk and talk the drive through again with your host. A shorter visit on permitted paths can still be worth it.
For lunch, a simple warung meal fits the day well. Ask what comes on a mixed rice plate and whether the spice can be adjusted before you order, and carry enough drinking water for the walk.
Keep the rest of the day empty. The highland lake temple at Bedugul is a separate route in our guides, with its own 90–180 minutes of road from Ubud, and the two long drives are better on different days with a quieter day in between.
We plan with 90–150 minutes each way. That is a traffic buffer for planning, not a guaranteed journey time, and it is the reason we treat Jatiluwih as a day of its own.
In heavy rain, skip the longer walk and reconsider the drive with your host that morning. In lighter weather, a shorter visit on permitted paths can still be worthwhile.
Arrangements can change, so we do not quote a price. Check on arrival what any ticket or payment covers, and whether a commercial photo spot is charged separately.
We do not recommend it. Both need a long drive from Ubud, and adding the lake temple reduces the terraces to a brief stop.
