Short answer: the simplest way to reach Koh Samui is to fly into Samui Airport (USM), which is on the island, 15–60 minutes by road from the main beach areas. Surat Thani Airport (URT) is on the mainland and means a road-and-ferry journey. For a first stay, Bophut and Chaweng are the easiest bases, with Lamai as a strong southern alternative. The two airports are not interchangeable, even when a booking page shows both for the region.

Here is how the two routes compare, what to check for each, and how to pick the beach area that fits the trip you want.

Flying into Samui Airport (USM)

USM puts you on the island, so the rest of the arrival is a road transfer. At the airport, compare the transport desk with a hotel pickup and confirm the total price, the vehicle, luggage space and the exact destination. Our editorial road buffers from the arrivals exit are:

  • Chaweng or Bophut: about 15–35 minutes
  • Maenam: about 25–45 minutes
  • Lamai: about 35–60 minutes

Traffic, the final hotel access road and the weather can all stretch these. Save the hotel address in Thai and the pickup contact somewhere you can open without data. More on this in our Koh Samui Airport to Hotel Guide.

Going via the mainland: Surat Thani and the ferry

Landing at Surat Thani (URT) means a road journey to the coast and a ferry across. There are two sensible ways to handle it. You can book and check each part separately, or you can buy a clearly defined through-service that covers the whole trip. In both cases, read exactly what is included and where each leg starts and ends.

On the island side, ferries do not all use the same pier. Check the operator and the exact pier printed on your booking. In Nathon, the town waterfront is not necessarily your departure point, so do not treat the two as the same thing.

The weak spot of this route is the sea. Ferry schedules are vulnerable to conditions, so leave a generous contingency before any onward flight. A dry morning does not guarantee an afternoon crossing.

When the weather matters

Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and has its own weather pattern, so do not copy a Phuket calendar. Heavy rain and rough seas can affect transfers as well as excursions. Check the local forecast and operator notices close to your dates. If a boat trip such as Ang Thong National Marine Park matters to you, book a flexible day after it and keep an island alternative ready.

Which beach area to base yourself in

Most first-time visitors are happiest in one of three areas on the east and north coasts.

  • Bophut is a strong first-visit choice for evening dining and the atmosphere of Fisherman's Village. Check that your hotel is genuinely walkable to the village and that the beach frontage suits you. A hillside address changes your daily transport budget.
  • Chaweng suits a lively beach holiday with plenty of services. The north, centre and south of the beach have different street atmospheres, so check the exact location and noise reviews. If you enjoy staying local, the convenience can save on transport.
  • Lamai is the other substantial beach base, south of Chaweng. It suits a local routine with selected outings, such as Hin Ta Hin Yai or the temples to the south, rather than daily evenings on the north coast.

For a quieter stay, look at these three instead:

  • Maenam has a slower coastal rhythm. Properties range from easy village access to isolated grounds, so check the road and evening food options.
  • Choeng Mon is a compact bay with a small local area, close to the northeastern temples such as Wat Plai Laem. Confirm the gradient and distance from your room to the shore; hillside hotels can mean a shuttle or repeated rides.
  • Taling Ngam and the west coast are for a deliberate retreat and coastal evenings. They are less convenient for frequent trips east, so confirm meals, transport and the cost of leaving the property before you commit.

Our Where to Stay in Koh Samui guide compares all six in more detail.

Getting around once you are there

Samui has no metro, and every beach-to-beach day is a road journey. Agree the fare before any taxi or locally arranged ride, and ask whether a quote is per vehicle or per person. A songthaew will not always behave like a fixed-price city bus. For a day with several stops, a driver for a half or full day can work well, as long as the waiting time and the return are agreed up front.

You do not need a scooter to enjoy the island, and it is a poor improvised solution for inexperienced riders. Steep villa roads, patchy pavements and evening traffic make short distances awkward, so ask your host about the actual walk rather than trusting "near the beach". Group your sights by coast, keep the midday hours light, and arrange the ride home before you settle into dinner.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to fly to Koh Samui or to Surat Thani?

Flying to Samui (USM) keeps the whole arrival on the island, with only a road transfer at the end. Surat Thani (URT) adds a road-and-ferry journey that depends on sea conditions, so it needs more time and more checking.

How far is Samui Airport from Chaweng?

Plan roughly 15–35 minutes by road from the arrivals exit to Chaweng or Bophut. Traffic, weather and your hotel's access road can add to that.

Which part of Koh Samui is best for a first visit?

Bophut if you want easy evenings around Fisherman's Village, Chaweng for a lively beach with many services. Lamai works well if you prefer a southern base with a local routine.

Can you get around Koh Samui without a scooter?

Yes. Use taxis or locally arranged rides with the fare agreed in advance, or hire a driver for a half or full day when you have several stops.
