Krämerbrücke is an inhabited stone bridge in Erfurt's old town, lined with galleries and shops. During Advent it makes a good shopping and architecture walk alongside the Christmas market, but it is not a separate Christmas market confirmed for 2026. Each shop sets its own opening hours, so see it in daylight and check any specific business before you go. Our Erfurt Christmas Markets 2026 guide includes routes that combine the bridge with the craft courtyard and Domplatz.

What makes the bridge different

The bridge was built in 1325. Its original 62 narrow houses were later combined into 32, which is why crossing it feels like walking along a small street rather than over a river. People live and work here, so the walk feels quieter and more everyday than the bustle on Domplatz.

The tourism office lists galleries and shops selling ceramics, glass, jewellery, wooden work and regional food. Christmas market hours do not apply here. A shop may still be closed when you pass in the morning, and the bridge is pleasant to walk even so. For a particular purchase, check that business's own hours.

When to go

Daylight is best for appreciating the façades, windows and materials. In December it gets dark early, so put the bridge before lunch or in the early afternoon if architecture matters to you. You can return later for the lit-up atmosphere if the extra distance still fits your plan.

  • For a first visit: an optional daylight detour on the way from Fischmarkt to Domplatz.
  • For a craft-focused day: start the morning on the bridge, then visit the courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17 after lunch (3–6 and 10–13 December, from noon).
  • For a couple's weekend: walk the bridge while there is light, take a long indoor break and finish on Domplatz in the evening.

Photographing Krämerbrücke

Look for two different views. Inside the street, doors, windows and the line of façades shape the picture. From outside, the structure above the water becomes clearer. Use public paths and avoid private entrances in search of a better angle.

Keep the passage clear and remember these buildings are homes and workplaces. Shops set their own rules on photography, so ask before taking detailed pictures inside. A close-up of a stranger is not needed for a good memory of the place. Three images often say enough: an overall view, an architectural detail and one picture of your own walk.

Buying on the bridge and at the market

Advent shopping in Erfurt comes in three forms: the market stalls, the limited-date craft courtyard and the established shops on Krämerbrücke. A brief stop suits a small, spontaneous purchase. For a special piece, allow time to talk about materials, making and care. If you travel by train, think about how a delicate item will get home, and ask about packaging or shipping. Buying before Christmas does not automatically mean delivery before the holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Is Krämerbrücke part of the Erfurt Christmas market?

The official market locations are Domplatz, Fischmarkt, Schlösserbrücke, Anger and Willy-Brandt-Platz. The guide treats Krämerbrücke as a shopping and architecture walk with individual shop hours, not as a market location.

Is the bridge accessible?

The guide's access information covers Domplatz in detail but does not establish access conditions for the Krämerbrücke shops. Narrow shop interiors are left out of the guide's route for shorter walking distances. Check the specific shop if you have particular needs.

Is Krämerbrücke a good option in the rain?

Only partly. The shops offer a few minutes indoors, but the bridge itself is not a consistently dry place to spend time.

For the craft courtyard dates and routes, see the Erfurt guide (PDF) or our page on an Advent weekend in Erfurt.
