Walking the Walgun Cape Byron track: the 3.7 km loop or the route from Main Beach to the lighthouse, timings, park alerts, heat and what to bring.

Direkt zum Artikel ↓The official Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track is a 3.7 km loop over the headland and past the lighthouse, but the steps, the stops and the heat matter more than the distance. Walk it in the morning, check NSW park alerts before you go, and decide at the start where you will finish or turn back. If you would rather walk from town, follow the coast from Main Beach past The Pass and Wategos up to Cape Byron Lighthouse. That takes roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours of walking before any stops.
Below are both versions, the timings we use, and the checks that matter on an exposed headland.
The track carries a dual name: Walgun, the Aboriginal name, sits alongside Cape Byron. It is a reminder that this is Country with continuing Aboriginal connections, and that signs on the headland are worth reading rather than walking past.
You can approach it in two ways, and they are separate decisions:
Neither has to be done in full. A coastal view, a shaded stretch and the climb to the lighthouse each give you something different, and a shorter section walked with time to stop often beats finishing the longest option in a hurry.
This is route 1, "The headland day", in our Byron Bay Itineraries. The times spread the walk over a full day with long breaks, which is the point: you are never on the exposed part for hours at a stretch.
Our planning budget for the day is AUD 50–100. Interior tours of the lighthouse are arranged separately, so check those in advance if they matter to you.
Heat, storms, surf and strong wind all change what is sensible on the headland, and exposed sections feel very different in wind or in full sun. A morning start avoids the worst of the heat on the climbs. The light also changes across the day, so the same view at 09:00 and at 16:30 will not look alike.
Work out the return before you start, not when you are tired at the top. You need a way back from the lighthouse, and that choice belongs at the bottom of the hill, not the top. If heat, mobility or an alert makes the headland unsuitable, the alternative on our route card is a shorter beach walk instead.
The walk is easiest from a base in the town centre, where you can leave on foot and come back for a rest. Wategos puts you close to the headland, with slopes, limited parking and fewer everyday services as the trade-off. Where to Stay in Byron Bay compares both with four other areas.
The official loop is 3.7 km, but plan by time rather than distance because of the steps and stops. The linear route from Main Beach to the lighthouse adds up to about 1.5 to 2.5 hours of walking, plus whatever breaks you take.
Yes. Start at Main Beach and follow the coast past The Pass and Wategos Beach. The last section is a 35–55 minute climb to the lighthouse, so leave energy for it.
Morning, so the climbs come before the heat builds. Check the weather and park alerts before you leave, and decide on your finishing point at the start.
Sometimes, but only in season, and sightings are never guaranteed. Go for the headland and the views, and count any whale as a bonus.
The headland route with times, walking legs, a budget range and a bad-weather alternative is one of ten day routes in the Byron Bay Itineraries, together with ready-made 3, 5 and 7-day plans. For the lighthouse, The Pass, Wategos and the beaches on your phone without signal, take the Byron Bay Offline Place Guide. If you have not booked yet, Where to Stay in Byron Bay helps you choose a base. Everything for the area is in our Byron Bay Travel Guides collection.
Times and prices are planning estimates from our research in September 2026, not timetables or guaranteed prices. Check official sources for your travel dates.
