For a family visit, the guide recommends choosing one side of Bethlehem per day. On the South Side, the National Museum of Industrial History and Christkindlmarkt work well together, and St. Nicholas visits on open market days. In the historic district, Christmas City Village, a short tour or the Putz suit a calmer afternoon. Age rules differ at each place, so check them for every child. Our Bethlehem, Pennsylvania guide includes a family route.

Age rules at a glance

Each organiser sets its own thresholds, and one rule does not carry over to the next:

  • Christkindlmarkt: children aged five and under enter free.
  • National Museum of Industrial History: children six and under enter free, and young people aged 7 to 17 pay US$10. On Family Sundays, children under twelve enter free with a paying adult.
  • Hot Glass glassmaking: minimum age six, registration required.
  • Christmas City Village: free admission for everyone.

Work out each item for your children's actual ages and your chosen day before you add up the family budget.

St. Nicholas and family events

ArtsQuest publishes St. Nicholas visiting hours that finish before the market closes: Thursdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 7 pm. These apply on open market days only and do not add a Thursday in November. If this meeting matters to your children, plan it early rather than just before closing.

Separately booked breakfast dates are also announced. Treat them as distinct events with their own date and ticket inclusions, as general market admission does not include breakfast. For music and other changing activities, follow the current daily programme and do not build the day around a performance until its time and location are confirmed.

A family Sunday on the South Side

The guide's family route uses an open Christkindlmarkt Sunday, when the museum's Family Sundays arrangement can lower the cost:

  1. Morning at the museum: 602 East Second Street, open from 10 am. Bring a question, such as which machine your children would like explained. Skip galleries that do not interest them.
  2. Break: food and rest before the longer market circuit.
  3. Afternoon at the market: let each child choose one area to explore. Buying something is not required.
  4. Short final circuit: revisit a favourite stall, then head home. The market closes at 6 pm on Sundays.

If the museum does not suit your children, start directly at the market and shorten the day.

Keeping the day manageable

One scheduled family activity plus unstructured market time usually works better than several appointments in a row. A few practical habits help:

  • Meeting point: agree on one before anyone wanders off.
  • Small tasks: children can look for a material, an interesting shape or a stall to revisit.
  • Breaks in good time: plan food, restrooms and a quiet moment before everyone gets tired.
  • Pushchairs: check the actual route and access to historic interiors. The Gemeinhaus has stairs and no elevator.
  • Clear ending: one final stall, a photograph or a drink, then the saved return connection.
