Rain at the Amiens Christmas Market: What to Do Instead

A wet day in Amiens needs a different order, not a cancelled trip. Choose one indoor venue that is open that day and fit a short market walk around it.

If it rains during your visit to the Amiens Christmas market, make one cultural venue the main stop of the day and add only a short walk among the chalets. The Musée de Picardie and Maison de Jules Verne are the guide’s indoor options, but they close on different days: Monday for the museum, Tuesday for the writer’s house. Our page on Amiens in the rain has a sample afternoon plan.

First check which venue is open

A rain plan only works if the place you choose is actually open. The guide gives the regular pattern for both venues.

  • Musée de Picardie: rue Puvis de Chavannes. Normally opens at 09:30 Tuesday to Friday and at 11:00 at weekends; closed on Mondays. Archaeology, sculpture, decorative arts and painting. Standard admission nine euros at the research date.
  • Maison de Jules Verne: rue Charles Dubois. Normally closed on Tuesdays and for lunch from 12:30 to 14:00. Bulky items and pushchairs are not allowed. Standard admission nine euros at the research date.
  • Cathedral interior: free access to the church, separate from the tower and treasury visits. Visit by day and stay discreet during services.

Both venues are closed on 25 December, as are the main market, the towers and the treasury. That day is not a good choice for a rainy-day plan of any kind.

A simple order for a wet afternoon

Route 4 in the guide is built for exactly this situation. It starts indoors and leaves the market for last.

  1. The museum first: pick one collection that interests you and ask reception which areas are accessible.
  2. A proper break: sit down for a meal or a drink after the visit and check your return plans if you stayed longer than expected.
  3. A short market section: if the rain eases, walk a manageable part of the chalets from wherever you are. The full route between Place René Goblet and Place de l’Hôtel de Ville does not need to be completed on a wet day.

On a Monday, swap the museum for Maison de Jules Verne, from 14:00 after its lunch closure. On a Tuesday, the museum is your option.

Warming up: what counts as a break

The guide is clear on one point that matters in the rain: a covered entrance is not a rest area, and a hot drink at a chalet does not come with a seat. If you need to warm up for longer, look for an open café or restaurant with indoor seating. Ficelle picarde, a crêpe filled with ham and mushrooms and baked with a creamy topping and cheese, is a regional dish for a seated lunch, where the restaurant menu has it.

Before a cultural visit, allow time for the cloakroom and admission. Make larger purchases after the museum, not before, so you are not carrying wet bags through the galleries.

What to drop when the weather turns

  • Cathedral towers: weather can close them, and the 302 steps are no fun when wet.
  • Boat trips: regular Hortillonnages departures are published for April to October, so a boat trip is not a confirmed December activity anyway.
  • Saint-Leu: a daylight walk by the canals is a shorter alternative if the paths are comfortable. In heavy rain, shorten it or leave it out.

Pack an extra dry layer, shoes for a long walk on wet paving and a bag with space for gifts so they stay dry.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Amiens Christmas market covered?

No. It is a route of red chalets through the city centre, open to the weather. For a longer break, choose a café or restaurant with indoor seating.

What can I do in Amiens on a rainy Monday in December?

The Musée de Picardie is normally closed on Mondays, so choose Maison de Jules Verne after 14:00 or a daytime visit to the cathedral interior, then a short market section.

Does the market close in bad weather?

The guide gives no weather closure rule for the market. It does note that the cathedral towers can close because of weather. Check current notices in the morning.

The Amiens Christmas guide (PDF) includes the full winter weather chapter and all six routes, each of which you can shorten for a wet day.
